Blues Country

Both blues and country lyrics can express downheartedness. What are any differences in the kinds of expression between the two styles, and what are any reasons for the differences. After looking around, I learned — Picking up on where Melting Media left off. Southern Folk and Blues music was a vague amalgamation of several different styles until two good forces caused a divergence in the late 1940′s: The Grand Ole Opry and Hank Williams. Now Southern Whites had a popular musical identity too, and Country music became more distinct. Use that as one of the reasons for the differences.

Blues Musicians From Mississippi

In 2003, Rolling Stone listed the top 5 guitarists of all time: 5. Robert Johnson – Mississippi Delta Blues player died in 1938 4. Eric Clapton – no explanation needed 3. B. B. King – Ambassador of the Blues 2. Duane Allman – Allman Brothers band 1. Jimi Hendrix – “Are You Experienced?” I think George Harrison should have rated higher than #21. More recently, RS published a list of the best drummers of all time: 5. Ringo Starr – Beatles 4. Dave Grohl – Nirvana 3. Neil Peart – Rush 2. Keith Moon – The Who 1. John Bonham – Led Zeppelin Personally, I’d have put Ginger Baker of Cream in the top 5 (he ranked #9). Anyway, are there any musicians today that can compare or are showing promise? All I hear on the radio are occasional G Major chords set against a tuneless “song”. There’s no heart, no originality, no excitement. The drumming is basic 5th grade beginning band. What do you think? Are there any real musicians on the horizon. Essentially — Music changes all the time, of course a lot of today’s music is just basic chord progressions like Am-F-C-G but there is good music out there as well. The top guitarists and drummers are chosen by their popularity which was very high in those times, however, today you can see the best ‘musicians’ in the top 100 etc, as the most desirable musicians. Their music isn’t complicated and all sounds alike, but weirdly that’s what most people want these days. However, I like the old music way better than the new.

Blues News

I’m not going to state my opinion on it but I heard from army service personnel that they disapprove of it, they like the dress greens a lot more. Do they have no say in the uniforms they wear for their career? Has the chain of command just ignored the majority? They made big changes a few years ago to the dress blues, any plans to fix them? Just a question. Essentially — The Dress Green uniform is the Green Class A uniform worn with a white shirt and a bow tie. The Dress Blue uniform no longer exists. The current uniform is the ASU. It is a combination of the Green Class A, the old Blues, and the old Whites (neither of which exist anymore). The Green Class A will be phased out in Fiscal 2013. The Blue uniform has more heritage and typically looks better than the Green uniform. There are some that do not like it, but the overall vast majority do like the ASU. Personally, I think it looks way better, although there are a few things I would lie to see tweaked on it. Like the combat patch pin on the pocket looks ridiculous, and I preferred the old Blues hash marks to the Greens small ones that are used. I would also like to see the beret completely gone and replaced perhaps by something like the old forage cap (what many incorrectly refer to as the civil war kepi).

Blues Country Musicians

I have not been able to come up with a good answer. -Both genres use I-IV-IV progressions, especially the 12 bar blues progression. -Both are characterized by the use of blue notes, flattened 4ths and 7ths. -Both heavily rely on 3 scales- minor pentatonic, major pentatonic, and blues scale. -Both are folk music genres that arose in the southern United States around the late 19th century. – Both have common themes of everyday life, hardship, love, friends, enemies, etc. Basically the only difference I can think of is that blues was played by blacks and country was played by whites (generalization). I mean, listen to Jimmie Rogers, the father of country music- he was stylistically similar to folk blues musicians like Leadbelly and Mississippi John Hurt. *I meant I-IV-V, not I-IV-IV. From what I can tell… You’re correct. Blues & Country have more in common than they do that separates them. This is because they’re development was almost completely interdependent. Virtually all the giants of country music (Jimmie Rodgers, A. P. Carter, Bill Monroe, Hank Williams, etc. ) were mentored by black musicians. Perhaps the critical difference is that Country drew much more heavily from the well of Anglo-Celtic ballads, broadsides, etc. (I. E. “folk music&quot than it’s Blues brother did.

My Love for Blues Music Festivals

As a fan of blues music, the summer is my favorite time of year. Why? Well, it’s because there are so many blues festivals to attend. It seems like every major city (and many smaller towns) will stage a blues music festival during this time. Usually the festivals are held outdoors – there’s just something about blues music that makes it ideal for outdoor events.

A blues festival usually features a few big names to draw in the crowds. Headliners such as Roomful of Blues, Los Lonely Boys, Tower of Power, Jimmie Vaughan, Charles Bradley, and Delbert McClinton are sure to get blues lovers lining up to buy tickets.

But perhaps even more exciting for true blues fans are the relatively unknown artists that make up the rest of the schedule. I can’t tell you how many great artists I’ve discovered through attending festivals; these are people that I’d never heard of until I saw them on stage.

The interesting thing about blues music festivals is that they appeal to all kinds of music lovers. Even if you don’t consider yourself a fan of the blues, there is so much variety in the average festival that you are sure to hear something you like.

Blues music is heartfelt music that relies on raw talent and technical skill, not some fancy trickery with Autotune or electronic instrumentation. The artists stand or fall on their own merits, without scantily-clad dancers or light shows to distract you from the music. And you won’t see lip-syncing in a blues performance.

Some blues festivals define “blues” rather broadly. They may include other types of music in the program such as country rock, jazz, soul, ethnic, and folk. Although purists don’t always appreciate this eclectic programming, it’s a way of attracting a broader audience to the event. Even festivals that stick closely to the “blues” formula will normally offer a mix of progressive and traditional blues artists.

Blues Country

You probably are dreading the coming winter season like a lot of folks are, and you rightfully have good reason to do so. There just is nothing that is as nice as the sunshine and warmth, which we get during the spring and summer months. Spring and summer provides us with so many activities that we often don’t even think about the exercise we are getting from it all. Such things as mowing the lawn, trimming the bushes and scrubs, cleaning the deck, or even power washing the sides of the house, all provide some great exercise. Why not try a great winter activity that can provide beneficial exercise and help shake the winter blues like learning Cross Country Skiing.

Like any new activity make sure to ask your physician if you are healthy enough to safely do it, and be prepared for accidents, as they may or may not occur. It’s like anything, some folks can run across a frozen lake or pond and love sliding and falling, while others are so clumsy or out of shape that they have difficulty walking across the road to get their mail in the winter, if this is you, then don’t bother reading this article any more.

Cross Country Skiing is safer to learn and do then Downhill Skiing, and it also uses more muscle strength and burns some fat calories while your having fun. After your physician says your safe to try it, find a friend or family member that skis regularly and have them accompany you to a sports store that sells reputable ski products. Once your there, have your friend help you select some skis and poles, and a nice pair of ski boots, because you will want some boots that not only protect from the winter elements but also help protect you from falls or other accidents. Ski Boots are a necessity as they are designed just for the purpose of skiing, they are made to attach to the skis and provide safety, unlike a normal pair of boots.

Have your friend select a nice flat area of land, like a field or large lawn that has a nice snow cover, to begin your training. Start out slowly, like you would when beginning any new activity, and as you progress you will not only improve your skiing ability but also your agility and fitness. Like the old saying about riding a horse, when you fall or get bucked off, get back up and try it again, the same thing applies to skiing. Cross Country skiing is basically done like walking, as one ski or foot moves forward, your pole on that side moves backwards, helping to push or propel you forward. Simply start out by watching your skiing friend or partner, just go a short distance to start getting the movements down, then as you become comfortable, you can start changing the course layouts and go for longer distances. Learning Cross Country Skiing is an activity that will make you wish winter season would stay around all year, it’s not only fun and great for fitness, it’s also a great way to help shake the winter blues.

There is a website that describes numerous activities and other methods to help eliminate the Winter Blues, this website is called: Winter Activities – and it may be found at this url: http://www.winter-activities.com

Mississippi Blues Music

My view on the subject has changed over the past 20 years. The father of one of my best friends growing up, a white man from Louisiana, mainly only listens to music created by people of African decent. Whether it be the blues of Mississippi John Hurt or Albert King to the soul of James Brown or Otis Redding. He insists that if the music was made by white people, it should not be labeled as blues. I disagreed at that time and used to have debates wih him, but the older I get, the more I think he was right. Blues music was created by oppressed slaves who were not doing it for money. Does the label ‘blues’ lose meaning when a white guy touches down in a jet with a posse of roadies? Thanks for any opinions on the subject. Hello Stella and Smiley, I agree with both of you, I guess it is just more difficult for me to find authentic, quality sounding blues from other races IMO. Thanks for your answer Miles. White people can have the blues. There was a time I was homeless and living in a tent with a wife and daughter; I’ve had the blues. I’m just saying when I listen to blues music created by non-African descent, there is usually something missing. . It just doesn’t sound as authentic for any reason. Excellent examples everyone. Those are the kind of examples I would debate with my friends’ dad years ago. . SRV, Roy Buchannan. I’m white and been very poor in the past. I’m aware there are millions of white people that are homeless, without a penny to their name. I never meant to imply that white people can’t be poor and depressed with the blues, but I think it is more uncommon for them to be able to channel the blues vibe with the same timeless passion and energy. I agree with you 100% sugaree. I don’t like labels anyway and get lost in the sub-genres out there today. Good music is good music. From what I can tell… There are lots of different points in this to talk about. I think the answer to the most important underlying question is that yes, the society that produced music matters when evaluating music. There is a nice bold absolute statement for you. After that there are a lot of smaller questions that come up that can be quite layered and convoluted and it’s difficult to give answers that are as absolute. Like, does blues lose meaning when a black guy touches down in a jet with a posse of roadies? What about all those oppressed former slaves who absolutely were doing it for money? How much of this is a real difference that you can hear in the music and how much of it is a sort of ambiance that we feel we get from perceived authenticity? And how much of a difference does it really make when that perceived authenticity isn’t really as authentic as we were hoping? Is it nostalgia? And if so- nostalgia for what? I guess when it all comes down to it for me, yes, race matters, but at the same time the only way to evaluate music is on a case by case basis. ok, where was i. . Case by case. . Race matters. . Ok, lets modify that last bit to say that the society you were raised in matters and to a lesser extent race matters. . And then lets do any case by case basis. the carter family• i like the carter family as an example in a lot of ways. To begin with, they are strongly associated with country music and not really associated with blues even though, if you really listen a lot of there songs are very similar to the blues recorded at the time and they had a huge impact on blues going forward. A. P. Himself was known to travel around the Appalachians collecting songs and he had a black friend (whose name escapes me) who would mainly travel with him, helping him to gain the trust of black musicians. The carter family also had a lucrative radio contract, something that certainly effected the sort of act they performed and could be considered an opportunity that probably wouldn’t have come along if they had been an african american act. But ultimately, what makes them have that feel of an act that can transcend race? Sarah’s singing and maybelle’s playing. bobby charles• there is a story that bobby charles did a phone interview with leonard chess where he sang for him a little and convinced chess to sign him. When chess finally met the white cajun musician, he was taken aback in surprise. I also think it is interesting that in a tale that sounds a lot like black musicians, charles was a mild success on the R&B circuit until a white guy named bill haley came along and covered “see you later alligator. ” what makes him transcend race? His singing and playing. johnny otis- he was greek, with olive skin and curly black hair, and could generally pass for a very light skinned black man. “As a kid I decided that if our society dictated that one had to be black or white, I would be black. ” eh. . I was gonna do more but I dont want to any more.
